World Folklore Day Celebration 2026

World Folklore Day 2026 was celebrated jointly by the Indian Folklore Congress, UNESCO Chair of Calicut University, Folkland International Centre for Folklore and Culture, and Sargalaya Craft Village, with the CSR support of Dorf Ketal Chemicals, at Sargaalaya Kerala Art & Craft Village , Iringal, near Vadakara, in Kozhikode district, Kerala, India. This year’s celebration was particularly significant as it marked the 180th anniversary of the coining of the term “folklore” by William John Thoms in 1846. The occasion was also especially meaningful for India, as the Indian Folklore Congress is commemorating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of sustained scholarship, research, documentation, and promotion of folklore and folk culture in the country. The programme brought together scholars, academics, cultural activists, folk artists, and representatives of cultural institutions to celebrate the richness and continuing relevance of folklore and living cultural traditions. Mr. Rajesh T. K., (Chief Operating Officer Sargaalaya Kerala Art & Craft Village) welcomed the distinguished audience and dignitaries. Dr. V. Jayarajan, (President of the Indian Folklore Congress) presided over the function. The introductory address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) E. Pushpalatha, (UNESCO Chair Holder, Calicut University)_. The inaugural address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Rasheed Ahammed P., (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Calicut University). The function was followed by felicitation speeches by Dr. Ahamadu Zirajuddeen, (Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology, ITSR, Wayanad), and Dr. Jubina Rosa, (Assistant Professor, ITSR, Wayanad). Mr. K. Sureshan, (Folkand) proposed the vote of thanks. Following the inaugural ceremony, the guests and audience were treated to a vibrant presentation of traditional folk songs and stick dance. Of particular importance was the presentation of folk songs from Kunnathu Nadu, a tradition that has survived only through a very small number of remaining practitioners. The performance was presented by Nattu Thanima, a folk arts group from Kunnoth Paramba, Kannur district, featuring both male and female artistes.
